FDR's Speech at Madison Square Garden (October 31, 1936)

"We had to struggle with the old enemies of peace—business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering.

They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob.

Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me—and I welcome their hatred."

We need a modern day FDR.

Mike,
Timely post. From the other side, here's a link to Barry Goldwater's 1964 Convention speech also.

There is only one sentence that can be thought to touch on fiscal policy:

"We Republicans seek a government that attends to its inherent responsibilities of maintaining a stable monetary and fiscal climate, encouraging a free and a competitive economy and enforcing law and order."

That's it. In the whole speech. Nothing about "leaving debt to the grandchildren", "debasing", "debtor nation", balanced budgets, etc...

This speech was a values speech, mostly about defending the American way against a Communist enemy. Goldwater was a founding memeber of the modern day conservative movement. I believe I read that Ronald Reagan was there and after that speech decided to become Republican. The Conservative Movement has been "highjacked", there never before was such a thing as a "fiscal conservative', the GOP is making a big mistake in this regard. Resp,

Indeed it was Goldwater's acceptance speech that moved Reagan "across the isle", leaving the Kennedy camp to support Goldwater and then made this speech the following October just prior to the election.

FDR was a Dem http://bit.ly/8QnzM0
Goldwater a Rep http://j.mp/4X9Rrp
Reagan was a Dem w/ dominant Republican values http://j.mp/51uWIV
Yet they were like-minded!

Begs an answer to the question King asked http://j.mp/4K0bZN
